My Reflection on Zoom Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused disruptions in aspects of our lives including education. As a university student I had to adapt to a way of learning; attending classes through the platform called Zoom. In this blog post, I intend to share my journey of using Zoom for my studies, the challenges, and opportunities I encountered and the valuable lessons I learned.

I never anticipated that my university education would be disturbed by apandemic. When COVID-19 compelled all classes to transition into a format Ifelt anxious and uncertain about how I would adapt to this sudden change. As someone who had never used Zoom before, concerns about glitches, limited face-to-face interaction and the quality of instruction weighed heavily on my mind. However, after weeks of utilizing Zoom for my studies, I began recognizing some aspects of online learning that genuinely resonated with me.

As I became more skilled in using Zoom, I also became more involved in a range of activities. One thing that stood out during this time was the abundance of seminars, workshops and discussions that were a click away. The geographical limitations that used to hinder my participation in events disappeared, giving me the opportunity to connect with experts, scholars, and professionals from all over the world. This newfound accessibility expanded my horizons. Introduced me to a variety of viewpoints that enhanced my academic journey.

Another benefit of Zoom was that it allowed me to customize my learning environment and schedule. I could choose where and when to study, depending on my preferences and availability. I could also record the lectures and replay them later if I missed something or wanted to review the material. Zoom also offered various features and tools that enhanced the learning experience, such as chat, polls, breakout rooms, and whiteboards.

Nevertheless, Zoom presented its share of difficulties and constraints that I had to navigate. A significant challenge I encountered was the divide, which impacted my ability to access learning. There were instances when issues with internet connectivity bandwidth limitations or data expenses disrupted my learning journey. Additionally, power outages, technical hiccups or device compatibility issues occasionally resulted in missed classes or incomplete assignments.

One of the challenges with using Zoom was that it could not completely recreate the experience of being in a classroom. I longed for the connections and interactions with my peers and instructors that fostered a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, I missed the direct activities and demonstrations that enriched my learning and comprehension. At times Zoom diminished the quality and depth of the content and feedback.

When I first tried using Zoom, I found it difficult to understand how the software worked. I encountered some challenges when I initially took the exam through FEDENA “Fedena is a cloud-based school management system used globally, including Mogadishu University, offers features like online admissions, fees, exams, grades, library, attendance, assignments, and communication.” Everything was going until the 10 minutes of the exam. Unexpectedly my internet connection. I lost access to both the platform and the exam itself. This situation caused me to panic as I desperately attempted to reconnect. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work. It felt like failing the exam and subsequently jeopardizing my overall course performance was inevitable.

I suddenly reached for my phone. Dialed my lecturer's number hoping that he would be understanding and willing to assist me. To my relief, he answered the call. Reassured me to remain calm and not stressed. He kindly offered me an opportunity to take the exam as an oral, through Zoom instead of FEDENA. I felt a wave of relief wash over me for his compassion and flexibility, in this situation.

Despite the difficulties, Zoom has presented me with chances to expand my knowledge and develop during the pandemic. As both a student and an academic I have been fortunate enough to explore the opportunities that Zoom has offered. Whether it is taking courses and earning certificates or participating in meetings and symposiums, Zoom has truly opened a realm of possibilities for me. It has allowed me to have flexibility in managing my time and learning from experts and institutions worldwide.

One of the things about using Zoom is that it allows me to take online courses and earn certificates. I have managed to earn certificates and boost my resume, which has been beneficial for my career. Zoom enabled me to become an e-student and attend online courses without leaving home. It has given me the opportunity to study from online sources like Coursera, SimpliLearn and Udemy.

Zoom has also been a tool for me to connect and collaborate with individuals, from backgrounds and fields. Additionally, I have actively participated in communities and groups that align with my interests and passions. Overall Zoom has broadened my professional networks while also providing avenues of growth and exploration.

Considering the pandemic, Zoom has proven to be a resource for me to continue my learning and personal growth. It has played a role in overcoming the challenges and limitations that have arisen during this time.
